October 4th - National Poetry Day 2012

Today is national poetry day! To celebrate I thought I'd post my favourite poem. I um'd and ah'd about what to pick because I have (as many of you may have guessed!) multiple favourites of pretty much everything, but this particular poem has always really struck me.

there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I'm not going
to let anybody see
you.
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he's
in there.

there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody's asleep.
I say, I know that you're there,
so don't be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he's singing a little
in there, I haven't quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it's nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don't
weep, do
you?
- Charles Bukowski

Monday

Site Of The Month

I absolutely had to make a post about this Big Cartel Shop I've just come across. It's called Miles To Go and they specialise in "The art of literature", meaning, they do really cool shirts and jumpers etc, with book covers/their own designs based on books printed on them. Below is a little wishlist I've made of my favourite t-shirts.

1) To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee / 2) Tell Tale Heart - Edgar Allen Poe / 3) The Perks Of Being A Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky / 4) Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk / 5) Sirens Of Titan - Kurt Vonnegut / 6) Bluebird - Charles Bukowski / 7) Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut / 8) 1984 - George Orwell / 9) Howl - Allen Ginsberg.

There are lots more designs on the site as well as posters, phone covers, wallets, stickers and bags. I just think it's such a cool idea - we wear our favourite bands on our shirts, why not our favourite books?

You can visit the shop here.
