Bookish Christmas Haul

Just a little post about the bookish things I got for Christmas! First up from my brother I got this amazing GOT book; Inside HBO's Game Of Thrones. It's a beautiful book, the cover is gorgeous and it's opened by a preface from GRRM himself. There are chapters about each of the main family's and characters and the locations, as well as some behind the scenes stuff! Such a great gift to receive if you love the series like I do!

I also got the Invisible Monsters Remix! This has been on my list for so long now and is basically a remixed version of the original story. I adore Palahniuk so this was a must have for me but I've never read or even really heard of a remix book before (unless you count the horror-classics like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) so this will be an interesting one! I'll definitely do a post when I've read it to let you all know how it differs from the original.

I also got James Franco's début novel Palo Alto which I'm reading at the moment. I've wanted this book for a long time because I have a very soft spot for Mr. Franco but I was worried it wasn't going to live up to my (very high) expectations...luckily though I think it's great! I'm really liking his writing style and it's reminiscent of a lot of other writers I like, expect a post soon!

Some GRRM! Hurrah! I'm so excited to get stuck into Fevre Dream, again; expect a post soon!

And finally; a Personal Library Kit! How cool is this?!? It was a gift from my best friend who had told me she'd found me "the perfect gift" and how right she was! In the kit you get a changeable date stamp, ink pad, pencil and inserts for your books to stamp, needless to say I'll be stamping all of my books...

Thursday

I saw that Soon Remembered Tales was starting a new "currently" feature to "break up the book talk" and thought it was such a neat idea that I'm going to give it a go! I think I'm going to do this feature every 2 weeks instead of weekly/monthly and it will just be what I'm currently doing!

Watching: Films! I seem to be in a really film mood at the minute, I even got myself a netflix account but so far it has really disappointed me and nothing I want to watch is on there. This week I've been watching: The Labyrinth  Aladdin, Pride & Prejudice,  Breaking Dawn 1&2, Pineapple Express, Austin Powers; International Man Of Mystery, and Max & Mary. I watched this last one the other night on Film4 and absolutely loved it! It's stop motion animation and tells the story of two pen pals, one a forty something overweight New Yorker named Max, and one a little Australian girl named Mary and the letters they send throughout their lives. Something so different to what I expected, a really lovely film!

Listening To: Patsy Cline, Dusty Springfield, Death Cab For Cutie, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, and of course Christmas Songs!

Thinking About: University. I've just handed in the first draft of my Dissertation and couldn't be more relieved! now if only I didn't have this 90 page script to write...

Loving: Winter! My very favourite season, the time of year all of the best things happen in! Plus hats and scarf's! ❅ ❄ ❆

Reading: To The Lighthouse - Virginia Woolf, Gifted Hands - Kenneth Fenter, No Country for Old Men - Cormac McCarthy.

Making Me Happy: Christmas! I have now officially wrapped all of my presents and can't wait to give them to people! Christmas makes me so happy and I'm feeling really festive already this year...which may have something to do with us having our tree up in the second last week of November!

Site Of The Month

Last month I posted a "Christmas Gift Ideas" which was comprised of items I'd found on a few stores on Big Cartel. In keeping with the Christmas theme, this moth I've looked at Etsy to find some ideas for gifts for literature lovers. Please click any of the links below the pictures to be taken to the sellers pages where you can get more information on any of the products, see prices and more pictures.

Jewellery:

1. Pendant with 3 tiles, one a scrabble letter, one a Louisa May Alcott quote, and one a "Shh! I'm Reading!" print. 2. Pendant with print from The Catcher In The Rye. 3. Pendant with a Mr. Darcy quote. 4. The classic Penguin emblem on a pendant. 5.Filligree patterned pendant with a Bram Stoker quote. 6. Pendant made from a typewriter key. 7.Miniature book pendant (so cute!)
Also below are the Got Words Bracelet , the 3 book locket and the book locket.

Home wares:

1. Custom made hardback book carving, open the book out and display your carving, cut from the pages.
2. Keepsake Box with French typography on the lid, a lovely gift box  or just somewhere pretty to keep memories. 3. Small trinket box made from paper mache, with pages from "The Lord Of The Ring" as covering. 4. Metal framed lamp with almost a scalloped shade made from book pages, (this looks amazing lit up!) 5. Ceramic coasters with opening paragraphs from Ulysses  Moby Dick, Great Expectations and Huckleberry Finn printed on the surface. 6. Square trinket box with print from Romeo & Juliet on the lid. 7. Heart shaped trinket box with print from Romeo & Juliet on the lid. Also see below for this amazing Christmas Bauble.

Prints:

1. Dictionary page with a beautiful anatomical heart and flowers print. 2."I Love You To The Moon And Back" printed on the page of a vintage encyclopaedia. 3. Peter Pan decal on pages from the book. 4,5&6. Iconic Harry Potter images printed onto pages from the books (only 3 of 6 are shown). Also are these colourful gatsby prints below.

Clothing & Accessories:

1.The clutch is inspired by Natalie Portman's red carpet Lolita clutch, there are a few of these on etsy, this shop in particular offering Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Also available are Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker - Stories, The Poetical Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (features a bust portrait of Elizabeth and her signature on the front)The Vampire Armand by Anne Rice. 2. The scarf is white, 100% cotton knit, and features print from Jane Austen's Persuasion.

If you're in the U.K. be careful on Etsy, a lot of the items come from U.S. sellers so you might end up paying a fair bit in postage, but if you are in the U.S. then you'll probably find the postage is a lot easier for you. The products on etsy are a lot more charming and have a cute "gifty" feel to them, probably because the site is more well known for being about crafts and creativity, whereas BigCartel creates business  Whichever it is you decide to have a look at (if any) they each offer some wonderful things that perhaps you wouldn't normally see in the shops, and I think a lot of these things would make lovely gifts.

Site Of The Month

With it being November and all, this and next months posts will be orientated towards the gift spectrum. I'm a huge fan of Big Cartel because anyone can set up a shop on the site and begin trading anything from second hand books, to jewellery, clothing and home wares  During a recent scour of the store directory I came across some lovely things that I thought would make great gifts for book lovers. If you're anything like me, half of the gifts you buy others at Christmas are books, so I thought these would be really nice alternatives.

Jewellery: The Mymble's Daughter.
The Mymble's Daughter is a jewellery shop which offers beautiful, Victorian inspired designs. The shop gives free postage worldwide, which I think is amazing, and their products are lovely.
Above is the Sleeping Beauty Pendant (Which is much bigger than you think it's going to be!), The Charles Darwin "I think" earrings, The Edgar Allan Poe locket (inside is a tiny reproduction of an illustrated news page depicting Poe's grave), and the Oscar Wilde necklace. There are many other beautiful pieces on the shop including the Book Excerpt necklace which is an oval shaped pendant of a quote you choose, the site offers Pride and Prejudice, Tom Sawyer, Alice In Wonderland, or anything else of your choosing, this pendant in particular I feel would make such a nice gift. Purchases form The Mymble's Daughter also come wrapped in brown paper and tied with string, which is a such a nice touch. The stock on the front page of the site offers much more in terms of literary themed pieces, so perhaps they are stocking up for the festive season at the moment, (everything on this store is handmade!) The prices can be a little high at first glance, but once you counter in the handmade factor and the quality I'd say it's quite reasonable, especially for a keepsake gift to a loved one (or yourself!)

For The Techs! - Bookcharger.
Bookcharger is (as you can tell I'm by no means a "tech" myself...) still a little confusing to me, but I think the premise is great. Beautiful books are something you want to show off, but having them in piles around the house always gets a little too much, and it seems a shame to put a lovely cover away on a bookcase, If you have that problem and you also have an iPhone or an iPod, this would seem to be the perfect solution!
I've added pictures here of the Huckleberry Finn Bookcharger, but also available are bookchargers with the print of; Pride & Prejudice, Hard Times, Jane Eyre, The Odyssey, A Tale Of Two Cities, and Jules Verne. I think this a such a great idea! You can also use your iPhone or iPod while it's on the Bookcharger - smashing! The store ships product from the U.S. so if you live there you'll be paying $7.50 (about £4.70 GBP) in postage, but if you're anywhere else in the world it might start adding up, what with the item being heavier than your average paperback, The Bookcharger + postage to the UK is around £50, but if you know someone who'd delight in a product like this then I'd say it's not too bad a price.

This is a very similar idea to the one above - a great way to showcase a beautiful book, in this case, a beautiful old vintage book, this idea is not quite as modern, but still as inventive.
There is a huge collection of these on the shop itself spanning every genre, the above were just some of the clocks which captured my attention design wise. I think the most special thing about these clocks is that some of the books have "destroy" or "discard" signs inside from public libraries, so they've been saved and turned into something completely new. Also they are all one of a kind - the clocks for sale are one a piece, so you know no one else will ever have, or give as a gift, the same item. On the flip side though if you were feeling confident you could always make a book-clock yourself, all you would need is a plastic clock mechanism (very cheap), and a book you don't mind cutting up. Either way, this is a lovely thing to own

Décor and Keepsakes - The Book Tree Press
I think this may be my favourite in terms of lovely stock. The Book Tree Press produces beautiful hangings and objects made from paper items such as letters, printed paper and maps.
Above is the Carriage Clock, the Mail Hot Air Balloon, the Candelabra Christmas Decoration, the Bell Christmas Decoration and the Book Tree. I think these would be such beautiful decorations for any occasion - Christmas, weddings, parties or just home décor, they're so beautiful and quirky. I think the book tree and the hot air balloon are my favourite items and would look so great in any room. Although there is the same catch as the above shop, if you were feeling crafty enough, you could certainly make a few of these items yourself and knock of the £4-£50 price tag  The shop is based in the UK but ships internationally, and also sells books, cards and prints - definitely worth a look if you like the items above.

That's it for my first gift idea's sites! I'll be doing a similar post at the beginning of December so if you've enjoyed this or it's given you any inspiration then be sure to come back around then.
